The Composite Fillings Procedure
The procedure is done in five simple steps:
- To begin your composite filling cavity treatment, Dr. Stroumpos will isolate the tooth he’s working on.
- Dr. Stroumpos will then remove all of the decayed parts of your tooth to prevent any further infection.
- The resin is placed in layers over the opening in the tooth until it’s completely sealed.
- He’ll use a special light to harden the resin after each layer and ensure it’s strong enough to withstand daily wear.
- Dr. Stroumpos will shape the resin to fit in with your real tooth.

How long do composite fillings last?
Composite resin fillings can last for up to 10 years with proper care. As long as you brush your teeth twice a day, floss every day, and visit Dr. Stroumpos for cleanings and check-ups, your filling should remain strong.
We also recommend against harmful habits such as chewing on ice or using your teeth to open packages. These can not only break your resin fillings, but they’re detrimental to your teeth, too.
Are composite fillings strong?
Yes, composite fillings are strong. They need to be able to withstand the daily wear and tear of chewing, speaking, and oral hygiene.
While resin fillings may not be as strong as amalgam fillings, the composite resin is much less noticeable and will look like a natural part of your tooth. They also still last for a long time without needing to be replaced and they don’t break easily.
Do composite fillings have mercury?
No, composite fillings don’t have mercury in them. Unlike amalgam fillings, composite fillings don’t contain any metal. Resin fillings are created from a mixture of a safe plastic compound and glass or ceramic.
