You’re in Good Hands With Dr. Stroumpos
Here at Texas All Smiles, we’ll do everything we can to save your tooth before taking serious measures. However, in some cases, a surgical procedure is the last resort to restore your oral health and get you back on track.
Learn about our oral surgery procedures and why you can trust Dr. Stroumpos and his staff for high-quality, expert care.
Gentle Tooth Extractions
Sometimes, an extraction is necessary to prevent overcrowding or if a patient has a severely damaged, decayed, or impacted tooth. It may sound intimidating, but the procedure can be completed in a single visit with little to no pain. We’ll be with you every step of the way to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom tooth removal is one of the most common surgical extractions, performed when the third set of molars begin to grow in. Many patients choose to remove their wisdom teeth to prevent infection, crowding, and other dental complications. During the procedure, we’ll provide you with dental sedation or anesthesia to relieve any discomfort you may experience.
Soft Tissue Grafting
Our practice uses soft tissue grafting to restore the gum line and improve the overall appearance of your smile. We use a biocompatible grafting material to protect the tooth’s surface, eliminating a ‘toothy’ smile and correcting dental symmetry.
Post-Op for Oral Surgery
The days, and sometimes weeks, after oral surgery are a crucial part of the recovery process. We’ll provide you with post-op instructions to promote healing and reduce the risk of possible complications. With proper care, most patients experience a complication-free recovery and can return to work or school within one to two days after surgery.
After your procedure, you may be given a prescription-strength painkiller for the first day or two. However, most patients find that an over-the-counter reliever, like ibuprofen, is enough to relieve discomfort after the initial recovery period. Pain typically becomes less and less noticeable by the day, completely subsiding within one to two weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I care for the surgical site on the day of my oral surgery?
It’s normal for the surgical site to bleed and swell during the first few hours after surgery. You may be instructed to bite down on gauze pads, changing them as needed. Be sure to follow your surgeon’s instructions for pain relief and apply an ice pack to the cheek to reduce swelling.
Dr. Stroumpos recommends getting plenty of rest and being careful not to disturb the surgical area on the day of surgery. If possible, limit your diet to liquids and soft foods that require minimal chewing. We also strongly suggest that you have a responsible driver to accompany you to your surgical appointment and drive you home after surgery.
What should I expect on days two and three?
You can begin gently brushing your teeth on the day after surgery so long as you avoid the surgical area. You may gradually begin to incorporate solid foods into your diet, rinsing food from your mouth with an irrigating syringe after eating, as instructed by your surgeon.
You should also apply hot and cold compresses to the cheeks intermittently to reduce swelling, and continue to take pain medication only as needed
Is there anything else I should know about the post-op period?
After your oral surgery, we ask that you refrain from smoking for at least 48 hours. Doing so could cause clots to dislodge, resulting in a painful condition known as dry socket. You should also avoid using a straw. Please don’t hesitate to contact our office with any questions or concerns you may have about your personal healing process.
What if I have additional questions about post-op care?
During your initial consultation, we’ll explain what to expect and how you can best prepare for your oral surgery. Dr. Stroumpos will also provide you with patient-friendly, post-op instructions for a speedy and successful recovery.
