Your gums play an important role in your dental health as they hold in your teeth in place with your jawbone. It’s common for a person to suffer from gum recession due to gum disease, which will overall affect the health and appearance of their smile.

How the Process Works

After you’ve had a consultation with Dr. Stroumpos and he’s successfully examined your teeth and gums, he will put together a personalized treatment plan that suits your needs best. Once he schedules you for your soft-tissue, or gum, graft, you can expect this during your appointment:

  1. We will provide you with a sedative so you can feel relaxed and experience minimal discomfort throughout the procedure.
  2. First, Dr. Stroumpos will make an incision on the roof of your mouth and remove a piece of tissue from under the flap.
  3. Then, he will take the tissue and attach it to your gum tissue where there is exposed tooth root.
  4. After the graft has been removed from under the palatal flap, he will safely stitch the roof of your mouth back down.

Recovery for Your Smile

Your gum graft procedure is completed in one convenient visit to our Webster office. Dr. Stroumpos will provide you with healing tips and guidelines to help you recover quickly and comfortably.

During your healing process, we recommend you:

  • Eat soft, cold foods to make sure you don’t damage the graft with the first one to two weeks. You also should avoid hard or hot foods that can burn or irritate the surgical area
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash for a couple of weeks to prevent infections, plaque buildup, or issues with the graft.
  • Don’t brush or floss in that area until Dr. Stroumpos lets you know when a good time is so you don’t risk opening the wound or causing infection.
  • If you’re dealing with any pain or discomfort, over-the-counter pain medications will provide you with quick relief.
  • Resist from exercising or performing any strenuous activities for the first few days to a week.

Generally, soft tissue grafting is recommended once the gingival tissue has reached the mucosa. However, you may be a candidate for soft tissue grafting if you have noticeable gum line recession that is a source of embarrassment or a risk to your oral health.

When you come in for your initial consultation, Dr. Stroumpos can determine if soft tissue grafting is right for you. He will perform an oral examination to better understand the condition of your mouth and create a personalized treatment for your needs.

What should I expect during a soft tissue grafting procedure?

If you decide to undergo soft tissue grafting, your procedure will likely take place in just one appointment at our Webster office. First, the grafting site will be numbed, and the existing gum tissue will be loosened to make room for the graft.

Then, Dr. Stroumpos will suture the grafting material in place of your gums. After he’s all finished, you’ll be able to return home the same day and your recovery will last between one to two weeks.

Does soft tissue grafting hurt?

Many of our patients state that they experience little to no pain during their soft tissue grafting procedure. We also offer sedation options to help reduce discomfort and relieve anxiety before your treatment.

The amount of pain you have after surgery depends on the type of gum graft performed. If no tissue is removed from your palate, you should have little to no discomfort. However, if tissue is removed from your palate, you may be slightly uncomfortable for a few days following the procedure. Over the counter pain medications can help alleviate your pain.

How long is the recovery period following soft tissue grafting?

The recovery period following soft tissue grafting typically lasts one to two weeks. It’s good to know that it’s normal to experience some soreness and swelling at the grafting site after your procedure. However, this will subside after a few days as your tissue graft continues to heal.

Be sure to follow your post-procedural guidelines exactly as ordered by Dr. Stroumpos and take any prescriptions as instructed. Sutures usually dissolve or will be removed within a few days, and you should notice a significant improvement in the appearance of your gums within a few weeks.
