A Quick, Easy Visit with Sedation

Our team understands that many patients may have dental anxiety or phobia when visiting the dentist. At our Webster dental office, we want you to know we offer sedation dentistry to help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your visit.

With sedation dentistry, you’ll be able to receive the dental care you need without worry. Dr. Stroumpus can discuss our sedation options with you during your initial consultation and help determine which method is best for you.

Types of Sedation We Offer

  • Nitrous Oxide: Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen in which you simply inhale it through a mask. Soon after, you’ll begin to feel much more relaxed in the dental chair. Dr. Stroumpos or one of our team members will be able to control the amount you breathe in throughout your entire procedure. This is the only form of sedation where you can drive yourself home after.
  • Oral Sedation: This form of sedative is taken as a pill and is given to you prior to your dental appointment. You’ll need to take the oral medication about an hour before so it has time to settle in by the time you arrive. You will start to feel drowsy, although you’ll still remain awake. In some cases, patients may lightly fall asleep depending on their dosage. We may suggest having a driver after your treatment if you’re still feeling tired.
  • IV Sedation: Intravenous (IV) sedation is given by Dr. Stroumpus through your vein, which means you’ll begin to feel its effects quickly. During your procedure, an anesthesiologist will be carefully monitoring and adjusting the level of sedation you receive. With IV sedation, you won’t be asleep, but instead in a safer and more comfortable semi-conscious state.

Only you and your dentist can determine if sedation is right for you. Because sedation covers a spectrum of treatments, you will need to consult with Dr. Stroumpos to discuss whether light, moderate, or deep sedation best meets your needs.

Your eligibility for sedation will also depend on your age, health, and any other medications you may be taking.

What should I expect if I am sedated for my dental procedure?

That depends on the type of sedation you undergo. Oral sedation is relatively simple and involves taking a prescribed medication about an hour prior to your procedure. You’ll feel more relaxed, yet completely aware of your surroundings during treatment.

If you choose nitrous oxide, you’ll be instructed to inhale the gas at the beginning of your appointment. Additional nitrous can be administered throughout your procedure to keep you in a state of euphoria. At the conclusion of your treatment, you’ll be given oxygen to help ‘snap’ you out of your sedated state.

If IV sedation is right for you, you’ll be instructed to avoid foods and beverages the night before your treatment. A sedative will be administered to you intravenously prior to your procedure, causing you to fall into a deep sleep. A dental anesthesiologist will monitor you throughout the procedure and adjust the dosage as needed.

Are there any precautions I need to take after being sedated?

Depending on the type of sedation you undergo, a licensed driver may need to drive you home from your dental appointment. If you undergo IV sedation, you may need to be supervised for several hours following the procedure.

How long does dental sedation take to wear off?

Dental sedation will wear off at a different pace depending on which sedative you receive.

With nitrous oxide, it will wear off almost immediately after your treatment. When you receive oral sedation, it can take a couple of hours to wear off so you will typically need a ride home.

IV sedation will wear off throughout the course of the day and many patients will feel a bit loopy after their treatment. You will also need to have a driver with IV sedation.
